Sonoma’s first-ever cardiac screening for youth and young adults will be offered free of charge at Hanna Center this month.
The electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) testing will be offered for ages 12 to 25 on Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is required.
Sonoma’s Just1Mike foundation is offering the screening in collaboration with Kyle J. Taylor Foundation and Who We Play For. These foundations collaborate to honor the lives of three young people who died of cardiac arrest: Michael Brindley (16) Kyle J. Taylor (18) and Rafe Maccarone (15).
“Together, we work to ensure that other families, teams and communities will never know this pain,” said Sonoma resident Kristy Brindley, president of Just1Mike Foundation and mother of Michael Brindley.
The testing at Hanna Center will be conducted by medical professionals and read by physicians. An electrocardiogram test is fast, noninvasive and painless. A standard well-being exam or sports physical is less than 1% effective at detecting any heart conditions, but adding an ECG/EKG improves those odds to 85% to 90%.
Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of thousands of seemingly healthy kids every year and is the main cause of death for student-athletes on school campuses.
“One in 300 youth are at risk for an undiagnosed heart condition, which makes these screening days lifesaving days for some families,” Brindley said.
Michael Brindley died of cardiac arrest on June 21, 2016, after playing basketball at a summer camp outside of Chicago. The following year, Kristy and her husband, Bob, launched Just1Mike foundation, initially to offer electrocardiogram heart screenings to high school students. The couple moved to Sonoma in 2020.
Hanna Center is located at 17000 Arnold Drive in Sonoma.
